Thylacine's Defiance

In 1936, just 80 days after the species was granted protection, the last thylacine in captivity died. This marked the extinction of the thylacine; ruthlessly hunted and persecuted to extinction.

Since its extinction, the thylacine has captured the hearts and imagination of people around the world. Experts still pore over niche historical remnants, and YouTube content creators travel deep into the Tasmanian wild to try and catch a glimpse of one.

The thylacine obsession has led some of the world's richest to fund de-extinction science. All in a vain attempt to absolve ourselves of guilt in the eyes of Mother Nature.

Why are we so compelled to bring the thylacine back?

Why do we trawl through historical archives in search of some long-forgotten grainy photo?

Why do you go to Tasmania to chase a ghost?

This specific artwork was created so I could try and give back something that was lost. But to also serve as a warning for what might come. Many species on our planet are threatened with extinction. It can happen sooner than you think.

The age of the thylacine is over, and nothing we spend can buy back that time.

Yesterday's Fox - Illustrated Poem

Whilst walking within an ancient woodland near Leigh-on-Sea I found a fox skull. The woodland around this typically urban environment is ancient and oozes stories. I was instantly compelled to draw the skull and with this my partner Matthew Stanfield created a poem from it. This is our shared creation.

Celtic Folklore

I have a particular love for exploring windswept places and reading traditional folk tales conjured by people who lived and worked within them. I have undertaken specific research trips to the Outer and Inner Hebrides; in search for unique locations to inspire my illustrations which accompany these traditional stories.

One traditional legend which I've found a particular interest in visually recreating is Selkie tales. Selkies are specifically grey seals which have the ability to shed their skin and transform into humans on dry land. Seal people tales are very intreguing and provide imaginative descriptions which is perfect to translate into illustration.

Abstract Work

During my free-time I like to explore stone circles and other ancient sites. For this piece I wanted to capture the special spiritual landscape of Cairnholy Cairns (Nr. Dumfries & Galloway Scotland) in a way that invoked prehistoric cave painting alongside the heavy Neolithic architecture. I used a combination of a natural pigments and materials such as pine ink and bird feathers to create texture and linework. This piece stands out from the rest of my work by being bold and colourful.
